“Evil thoughts are also a sign of illness. Let us, therefore, guard ourselves against evil thoughts.”
–Mohandas Gandhi
In our culture, we prioritize our actions over our thoughts. We rightly believe in freedom of thought and speech and do not want to limit these liberties. This is good, but if we want to control our own actions, we best start by learning to control our minds. For it is from our minds and thoughts that our actions arise.
How best to control our minds? I have found the technique of “Walking with the Sages” extremely useful. Watch or read my speech to learn more about it. Read the rest of this entry »

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others?”
“If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
